Lichtwerth Castle

Great views over Rattenberg and the Inn Valley

Burg Lichtwerth | © Martin Göhring

Lichtwerth Castle is picturesquely situated in the middle of the Inn Valley, very close to Matzen Castle Estate.

History
The interesting and well-preserved castle, which was once part of the Münster estate, was probably originally on an island in the Inn and, judging by the very regular masonry and the bricked-up windows, was probably built in the 12th century. Around 1200 a branch of the Helbling family was named after it, and in the 14th century a line of the Freundsberg family lived here, who gave the castle to the Salzburg diocese in 1312 and took it in fief from them, but sold it in 1468.

Since 1543 it has remained in the uninterrupted hereditary possession of related families, who did not allodise it until 1873. It has always been inhabited. Lichtenwert belongs to the Inama - Sternegg family and is still very well preserved and comfortably furnished. The castle can only be visited from the outside.

Different names
As there was no uniform spelling for centuries, there are several different spellings for Lichtenwerth Castle, e.g. Lichtwehr, Lichtwert, Lichtwerth: Lichtwehr, Lichtwert, Lichtwerth, Lichtenwert or Lichtenwörth, whereby the syllable "werth" or "wörth" always stands for an island.

Location
Lichtenwert Castle is only about 80m off the B 171 between Schwaz and Wörgl, more precisely directly in the middle between St. Gertraudi and Brixlegg.
